On 19 November, 2022, the British Studies Centre at BFSU, the editorial department of Chinese Journal of European Studies at the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IES of CASS) and the British Studies Branch of Chinese Association for European Studies jointly organized a seminar on "The Political, Economic and Social Situation of the United Kingdom under the Challenge of Multiple Risks". More than fifty scholars from more than ten research institutions and universities participated in the seminar both online and offline.
Wang Zhanpeng, Deputy Dean of the School of English and International Studies; Song Xiaomin, chief editor of Chinese Journal of European Studies at the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Li Jingkun, Vice president of Chinese Association for European Studies gave welcome speeches and hosted keynote presentations.
Nearly 40 papers were presented at the seminar. In the keynote session, scholars Feng Zhongping, Jiang Xiheng, Chen Xiaolu, Cui Hongjian, Zhang Jian, Zhao Huaipu, Wang Jiaqiang, Wang Mingjin, and Zhang Zhizhou shared their opinions on topics including British foreign policy and Sino-British relations, the "gamification" and "Italianization" of British politics, the prospects of the development of the British financial sector, the UK-EU trade relationship, and the UK's role in the Ukraine crisis. According to the experts, the continued decline of national power has led to changes in the political and social nature of the UK, which are also reflected in the UK's foreign policy.
In the sub-forum on “Britain's Foreign Policy and International Role”, scholars discussed the UK's response to the Ukraine crisis, the latest trends in the UK's Indo-Pacific strategy and the UK government's policy towards China. In the sub-forum on “New Trends in British Politics, Economy and Culture”, participants discussed the current issues UK is facing, such as the political system dilemma, economic austerity, soaring inflation, blockchain construction, ethnic and regional issues, etc. Some of the speakers also shared their views on new developments in film and literature in the post-Brexit era. In the postgraduate sub-forum, PhD students presented their recent research findings on the coordination of technology and trade between Europe and USA, European Union Emission Trading Scheme, Huawei 5G issues in the UK and regional nationalism in the UK.
As the discipline construction of country and area studies is progressing, this seminar built a platform for domestic UK research scholars and promoted cooperative research and innovation between research centres in different universities and and other research institutions like high-end think tanks.
