讲座摘要:
Since the end of World War II, European nation states have been slowly and unevenly integrating with each other. At the same time, many regions within the European states have been demanding more autonomy and even independence. The United Kingdom has seen a particularly radical transformation of its governmental structures and the areas/regions it governs. Since the end of WWII it has seen the decline of its global empire, its growing involvement with Europe, the rise of the political demands of its major regions (Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) and an increasing demand for more local control particularly within its cities and the Northern and Southern regions of England. With all of these historical and political tensions are we witnessing the end of the United Kingdom or do these changes merely reflect the pressures and changes affecting the majority of nation-states?
